How we spent our Eidul Adha

Muslims celebrate only 2 days in a year.

Islam is all about time management. We are not encouraged to spend our time on frivolous matters throughout the year. We take a day off to celebrate Eidul Fitr and Eidul Adha. The two most important days of the Islamic calendar. Many people however stretch one day into one whole week. There are times we stretch one day into one whole month! Endless socialising and over eating. We all do enjoy eating but the never ending part is really upsetting our health...

Do not overeat!

We are supposed to fill our stomach with only one third food, one third water and the other one third to be left empty for air. Muslim lifestyle is really quite simple, not too many rituals except those prescribed by Allah SWT. Muslims are required to do their best to fulfil their once in a lifetime obligation , the 5th pillar of Islam, - the haj pilgrimage to Mekkah.

For those of us who are unable to join them, for various reasons, perform qurban, sacrificing animals and distributing their meat to the needy. It is not a burden but is yet a sacrifice as we need to part with our saving to fulfil this requirement.

Allah does not wish to burden us

Allah does not wish to burden us. Only those who can manage to pay for their one seventh share of a cow are allowed to do so. Those who cannot afford to make this sacrifice in turn are given the meat as it is the right of the needy to receive help.

After all, Prophet Abraham was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail. Both father and son were loyal to Allah and they humbly accepted the command, submitting to the will of God. At the last moment, Allah substituted Ismail with a ram and they therefore passed a very great test of sacrifice.

Act of Submission

To commemorate this act of submission and to remind ourselves of Allah's Mercy all Muslims try their best to also make a sacrifice during this holy month of haj. The big difference is we are allowed to sacrifice a lamb or one seventh portion of a cow or more, instead of having to sacrifice our children.

How Merciful is Allah. He does not need anything from us and we need everything from Him. How small we are and yet we sometimes walk haughtily upon this earth, forgetting who is the real Master of the Universe.

This Eidul Adha we decided to do something very different.

We decided to go to Seremban, Negri Sembilan to perform solat Eidul Adha with the revert brothers and sisters at the Masjid frequented by many reverts. Seremban is less than an hour away via the highway but since everyone would be using the main roads, we decided to take a drive along the old roads to avoid the usual massive holiday traffic jams.

It took us about half an hour to reach USJ 6 from Ampang. It took a long time because we were stuck in the jam and took a detour, via Duke highway, then to Bandar Utama before hitting NKVE to USJ in Subang. After that we took the KLIA Nilai road. All the effort was worth it as we managed to escape a very tortuous long crawl to Seremban.

Our main intention was to attend solat Eidul Adha (Eid prayers) in the Chinese Masjid (mosque) in Seremban. I met the imam and some of the Macma members there once. Had promised to visit them again. The kuthbah (sermon) was in Mandarin and some Arabic.

Mandarin

Very unique - if only I could understand Mandarin. It would be useful to distribute copies of the translation of the kuthbah. No point in sending the congregation(jemaah) nodding off to dreamland while the iman is speaking in Mandarin. What is the point of a kuthbah when it does not reach the ears and hearts of the jemaah? No doubt there will reward for listening but its better to share the knowledge. Don't you think so?

Chinese Style Masjid

Its really beautiful, with Chinese features and traditional Chinese style interior. The pagoda was a very nice touch. The best feature I loved are the gently swaying willow trees in the garden surrounding the building.

Let us pray for a safer world

The power of prayer and supplication

Do not underestimate the power of prayer and supplication! Allah SWT knows what is in our hearts. With so many calamities around us, we are going to pray a lot - for our own families and friends and for our neighbours . We have to not only pray hard but work hard to make this a better world.

Everyone and everything affected

A lot of work to be done, especially with the back to back disasters and loss of lives especially in Japan. Now the oceans, rivers and lakes, farms and parks are polluted badly. The fish, the seaweed, marine life and inhabitants are suffering. The seas are crying!

Be careful what you consume

Well, at least no more cruel and greedy hunting for the stubborn big time whalers. There will be no business for them for a long time. All food will have to go through radiation tests soon. Sushi anyone? Guess we have to use our discretion when it comes to certain food and products.

Power of Water

I feel sad to think of how people are suffering in the cold, some areas maybe be running out of supplies. It does not take an external enemy to disrupt a highly developed nation. Just power of water sent by the Almighty as a reminder and wake up call for us and the people of the world.

Help. Even in a small way

Life goes on and while we are busy living life and working as usual to fulfill our daily commitments. Let us get real and remember our fellowmen who are still reeling and suffering this tragedy. Let us find ways to help them, even if it is in a small way.

Food for thought

We may not have nuclear reactors but looks like the country may be heading that way. May Allah SWT protect us all. Even a developed and sophisticated nation like Japan cannot deal effectively in this situation. Are we absolutely sure we can do better? Decisions that affect life, health and safety are very tough. People who push for nuclear energy have to be absolutely honest with themselves and be sincere. Their decisions can literally kill - even their own families will be affected. Food for thought.

Make dawah to help others spiritually

Perhaps we can contact Muslim ngos which may have their own networks to reach out to those in need. It is a good time to let people know Muslims are kind and generous and are willing to share their wealth with people in difficulties. Make dawah by way of good deeds - that is sending spiritual help. May Allah SWT accept your good deeds and mine.

So very helpless, small and insignificant

I feel very helpless, small and insignificant in the face of these tests from Allah SWT. Some people will say natural disasters! Well, some disasters actually occurred as a result of our own doing. Did we learn anything?

Who holds up the mountains?

Let them think about it - who created the world and how are the mountains joined at the bottom of the sea? How are the clouds and sky held up like a canopy above us and how do birds fly? Allah SWT simply sent us a small sample of the day of reckoning but we do not know if people want to get the message.

Is Poetry writing a waste of time?

Poetry, Anyone?

Sometimes we get the impression that poetry writing is not so encouraged in Islam. Time is precious so we must manage it wisely. Maybe its to discourage people from spending hours trying to create the perfect poem - is it to express our thoughts and feelings, to share something beneficial, to praise Allah or is it just to impress others? Do not be influenced by our ego.

Time is Precious
No Rhyming Necessary

These days, we do not have to waste precious hours trying to make our words rhyme. Unless we are so very talented in rhyming , it is actually alright to tell it as it is. Know what I mean?

Be Yourself

I do not know too much about all this literary stuff but I will know whether I like what I hear or what I read. Its the message, the idea, the sharing that is important. Forget about trying to be someone else - it doesn't work.

Speed Writing for Practice
and to Jolt Memory

I have begun to write more often these days - once a week, though I should give more thought to the subject or topic. Been so busy lately that I did not even have time to type even a few lines. Just too busy - trying to balance work and ibadah. Alhamdulillah!

Write Like Crazy

I am starting to time myself when I write. Just choose a topic and write like crazy for 10 minutes. You will be surprised to find how much you can produce in just 10 minutes. I force myself to focus and tell myself to go with the flow. Of course by the time 10 minutes are up you will feel like writing more as your story has only just begun! If we organise our thoughts or have discipline, we can end the piece in a gentle manner, giving it an opportunity to grow into a lengthy story if we so wish.

Do Not Just Read!
Be a Productive Muslim!

All the ardent book lovers out there! Do not only just read! We may love reading but do you know all you people have gone through much in life, learned many things and are very qualified to write and share? We must balance what we do.

Read Read Read and Enjoy it all Then perhaps write a little to give back. Share your ideas and knowledge; entertain us even, by putting your knowledge and ideas into words.

Support Women Writers!

Like I had always said, we need more women writers who write about other women. Positive writing and also documentation. How are our brothers and sisters, our children going to learn if we keep it all to ourselves. Literally burying the skill, knowledge and information with us , taking it to the graves.

Amal Jariah

Do we have some sort of responsibility to share? And this process is two way - when people benefit or take positive action, we may also be rewarded for these actions. Insha Allah these good deeds are continuously rewarded (amal jariah) by Allah SWT.

If we have no time, start small

We do not need to write a thick book, even a few pages, even a pamphlet containing good information is good. There are also some companies that may sponsor the publication so the writer does not have to worry about finances but concentrate on writing.

Do not be shy - go for it!

Beginners do not have to feel shy. Find a writing buddy and co write a book - a story that encourages family values, short fiction that has a message, nasyid for children, a baby's first story book or even a book on how to plant vegetables in our backyard! The possibilities are endless so let us all start writing our first book or pamphlet!

Where to Start?

Those who do not know where to start can volunteer at ngos where help is much needed to write their newsletters, brochures, reports and magazine articles. That way your work gets published without incurring any cost. Of course your paymaster will be Allah SWT so do not expect a worldly fee for your effort. Amal jariah and continuous rewards insha Allah. The satisfaction you get is priceless!

Write with the Right Intention

One last thing, do not write only just to make money or enjoy instant fame. Our effort may become unnatural and calculating. Just be sincere and write good stuff. Write about what you enjoy or what you want to share with others. Write with responsibility and always ask yourself if what you write pleases Allah or not.

Support Muslim Writers

Muslim writers have limited market right now. Why? Probably because most of us have forgotten about them! Many actually do not know we have many good Muslim fiction and non fiction writers. We do not find fiction books easily even in large bookstores and even so the choice is limited. Locally we only get love stories favoured by young girls and religious books by Muslim writers.

There is not much choice and we often forget we can order books via the internet. Buying their books will help and encourage our Muslim brothers and sisters to improve themselves. We can help them achieve the financial independence to focus on good writing that not only entertain but perhaps educate us. Better that reading trashy novels that are of no benefit to us except fleeting entertainment.

Rezeki (Blessings and Bounties) is determined by Allah

Rezeki is from Allah SWT so do what we can and leave the rest to Him. Even without great monetary rewards initially, insha Allah your rewards and wealth will come in many ways that you least expect.

Interesting Stuff on Radio - Business Station

I heard this over the radio today as I was driving, I like the business station. The rest I added on my own. Other suggestions welcome.

SomeTips to Motivate Others

1. Listen to Understand, not listen to answer even before the person has finished speaking.
2. Emphatise with the person, try to see it from his perspective, not just our own.
3. Be cheerful and smile. Do not fake it. People will know the difference.
4. Acknowledge and validate achievements.
5. Be cheerful and compliment sincerely - do not be stingy or shy with compliments.
Compliments are free of charge. The returns are enormous when people realise you are sincere .
6. Some people may not be working for more financial rewards, they want self autonomy.
They may perform better if they are allowed to clock in at flexible hours, or work from home.
7. Try not to bring your personal problems to work and vice versa.
8. Be nice to people all the time, not only when you need them to do something for you.
9. Up grade yourself constantly and be willing to share ideas and skills.
10.Respect your staff, colleagues and junior staff - you will only get what you give.

Converts Association Open Day this Sunday 27 Feb

We've Moved!

Alhamdulillah! We are now at Bandar Sri Damansara, a nice quiet area with plenty of parking space. People come and go, things change. Our members are living in different areas, really far from our new place. Two in Ampang, one in Rawang, two in Shah Alam and another in Kajang. Alhamdulillah there are several of us still in Bandar Utama and Tropicana. They do make effort to do activities together but not as often as we like.

Address at : 21-2, Jln Meranti SD 13/4, PJU 9, Bandar Sri Damansara.

Its easy to get there :
Going from Taman Tun towards Ikea, go straight towards toll to MRR2 nearby.
Keep left and immediately after the toll turn into Bandar Sri Damansara at small road on left.
At the traffic lights turn right and keep going for quite a distance. You will then see shop houses on the right , across the road.

After passing McDonald's keep right and turn at traffic light.
Keep going straight, past the small hawker stalls, fruit stalls and the low cost apartments and school. When you see the last row of shophouses on the right turn into the Yukie Restaurant and Restaurant Al Bayinah. PDFM is on same row as Yukie, in bright green.Next to purple shop.

Insha Allah you will not miss it. Its very green !!! :) Now I know why our President chose this colour - can be seen from a distance. We may have tents and canopy on Open Day.

Open Day

Life goes on. We are having Open Day to introduce ourselves to the new neighbourhood. Perhaps we can share our facilities with the residents, especially reverts and school children.

Persatuan Darul Fitrah Malaysia is a convert and dawah association. Our main activity is convert support, silatul rahim and seeking beneficial knowledge. We also raise funds for the needy and have 'actively ' helped to take care' of several convert families for the past 10 years.

Some Families assisted by the Association and individual members
Case 1

Almost blind reflexologist and his wife. She became alienated from her family because she chose to marry a partially blind man who also happens to be Muslim. They have a young child, living in difficult conditions as it is difficult for him to earn a decent living.

Case 2

Security guard who has 3 children. 2 of his children have done quite well in the recent exams. He finds his salary insufficient and had been asking for help everywhere for the past few years. We recently gave him some start up capital to buy ingredients to cook and sell nasi lemak etc.

Case 2

Convert brother who gave up a well paid job as a bouncer as his wife convinced him to seek a job that is more appropriate for a Muslim. After resigning he could only obtain a job as a driver. Plus overtime he earns only around RM1000. With 9 children it is very difficult for him to make ends meet. We try to help the children in their education and some milk for his baby. However we can see he has a very happy family and they practise Islam together.

Case 4

Sole bread winner of a family with 3 kids. Husband in jail and terrifies her even when he is behind bars. Pending judgement, she leads a very insecure life and tries hard to support her children on her own. She is very sickly and suffers from asthma and bodily aches all the time. Insha Allah her faith is strong but there were many difficult moments because of her trying circumstances.

Case 5

Revert who does not have family support. She has SLE or Lupus, an autoimmune disease. She has to walk with a metal bar in her leg as her bones are brittle and weak. She will have fainting spells and be carried off in an ambulance from the office from time to time. Every 5 years she has to have the metal removed and a new one inserted. She had to withdraw her EPF money to pay for the metal etc. This sister at one time resorted to borrowing money from money lenders who threatened her.

Case 6

Elderly Chinese revert with no family. He is an asthma patient and sometimes sleep at different masjids. It is sad to see our brothers and sisters struggling on their own. Last Sunday I met him and he voiced his frustration.

He said he tried to show people his note that states he is very ill and needs money to pay for his medical prescription. We know he is genuinely sick as he had an attack and had to be sent to he hospital in an ambulance while visiting Perkim Bangsar.

Apparently the medication he got from hospital was not helping him. He said no one bothered to read his note and they ignored him. He was at a special talk by a famous guest speaker. It is sad because the speaker was just talking about charity and why we must give as much as we can to help the need and to promote Islam.

Apparently these people just came only just to listen. Its sad as they were busy with their own friends. Islam is not like that. He looked pale and haggard, a great change from the last time I saw him.

At one stage we 'adopted' some orphans (in a small way) in Kuala Terengganu. Most of the children have grown up now and we are interested to reactivate our support there insha Allah. May Allah make our hearts generous and be willing to share with others.I do believe the more you give the more you will get in return. Allah knows best. He is the best Provider.

These people are poor, not so educated and lack opportunities of getting knowledge and support. Knowledge, support and kindness can increase their iman. When they practise with knowledge insha Allah their rezeki may also increase.

Success Stories - people who survived their tests

There are several success stories of people who rose above their challenges . There are also those who try hard to be independent, they are patient and have do not like to ask for charity. If they are needy and do not ask, we have to find them and give them help. Muslims should be proactive and not wait to asked or make people beg.

Some judge those who ask repeatedly and refuse to help even if they can easily afford to. They feel that the money the possess belongs to them. Actually all rezeki comes from Allah and we are not the true owners.

Wealth does not belong to us

We only actually own what we have spent on our food and clothing. Any wealth left by us did not belong to us at all. It now ' belongs' to those who inherit from us. Any wealth spent on charity and in the way of Allah belonged to us and the rewards will be sent ahead of us. This is our true wealth because Allah will compensate us greatly for spending in His way.

Talk by Uztaz Mazlee - do not miss it!

Join us this Sunday at 9.30am. At 10.30 am there will be an hour talk by Uztaz Mazlee in English. There will be a Q and A session after that so fire away!!!

Chinese Lunch

We will break for lunch at around 12.30am, something simple but we are happy that we managed to get Chinese fare. Being Chinese we are never tired of eating halal Chinese food though we also enjoy Western and Asian dishes too. Pot luck welcome too. We are so blessed in Malaysia - we can choose any food we like and can choose halal. Alhamdulillah!

Comfortable and Friendly

Come over to have a look at our place. Its simple but comfortable. We have a fairly good library and magazines and books that cover other areas like health, cooking, sewing and parenting.
Look out for our cooking sessions - some sisters are already impatiently waiting for our announcements.

Past Cooking Demo Achievements

In the past our members shared their favourite recipes and we enjoyed the fruits of our labour after the demonstrations. We learnt wantan noodles, dry with soya and oyster sauce, and also with steaming hot soup and soft dumplings. We did lasagne, delicious fish curry, mushroom soup, garlic bread and hot buns. Also trifle, pancakes, creme caramels, butter cakes, chocolate cake, pizza, phyllo pastries with feta cheese and pine nuts and spinach, and sausage rolls.

Mediterranean baked chicken, baked lamb, Moroccan chicken dishes, strawberry meringue cake, cookies, Chinese dumplings, kueh ang koo, chicken pongteh, fresh egg noodles, prawn mee and evenIndian dishes like dalcha, tomato chicken and mutton keema .

We encourage members to take turns to share their favourite recipes. Sometimes we get together to cook dinner and share some ideas and knowledge on health and exercise.

Activities

Members can make suggestions on how to make the organisation more interesting and beneficial to the community. We are considering a photography club where members can take outings to take photographs. Travelling, eating, shooting and appreciating Allah's creations - multi purpose and great for all ages!!

Our usual Uztaz , Ezry Fahmy volunteers once a week at 6pm every Saturday - if you have any questions regarding Islamic finacing or syariah, he is the right man to approach. We discuss all sorts of topics ranging form Islamic financing, riba, gold and muamalat. He is taking a short break to prepare for his wedding. Classes will resume mid March.

In the meantime we will continue to hold Saturday gatherings and friends are welcome to come by to join us. Do give us a call become coming. An sms is best. Get our numbers when you come for Open Day.

Ladies Pampering Day

Sometimes we need to spend a couple of hours just pampering ourselves and relaxing. We help to apply henna on each other's hair, do neck massage, cook, eat and relax ... We discuss cooking, do counselling, give advice, motivate, share knowledge on Islam and health. There are lots of things to do on pampering day. No fixed rules, just learn to relax and let the stress of working and responsibilities melt away.....

Health Activities

Sometimes we meet and eat only healthy food, like salads, fruit juices etc. We talk about healthy recipes, ideas and even invite some friends to talk about bekam and acupuncture. Two months ago we had a bekam session with male and female therapists to help us. Alhamdulillah!

Join Us to Help Ourselves and Others

These are just some activities we had carried out. The Association is just an empty shell if it is not filled with people who want to learn and share with each other. Join us to seek beneficial knowledge and to serve Allah SWT by serving mankind. Encourage children to love Islam and become good citizens who are happy to contribute to society.

Giving charity, seeking and sharing knowledge and giving moral support to each other keeps us strong, healthy and happy insha Allah.

Busy but Beautiful Day

Busy Busy with Work

Alhamdulillah! Managed to get a perfect parking spot! Right in front of the shop where I wanted to buy my baking ingredients. Have to bake 6 chocolate cakes for Sunday. I do not really feel like doing them but I am grateful for rezeki from Allah. Do what we can and leave the rest to Allah.

Its usually very difficult to get parking in the city. Good to memorise some duaas that sooth the nerves and make us patient while driving round and round, trying to park. Strangely enough, I seem go find an empty parking space rather quickly when I remember to say my duaas.

Managed to get everything under one roof, Alhamdulillah! Drove home, deposited the many bags of goods into the house and prepared my dad's lunch by 11 am. I kept the food in several vacuum jugs to keep everything hot.

"Don't forget to eat your lunch" I reminded him before I left.

Min Fes Moroccan Spa, Gym and Cafe

On the way back from my errands I decided to stop over at my friend's shop in Mutiara Damansara. Pleasantly surprised to find her there and she mentioned that she was just trying to call me on the phone. Saw my poster of Harun Yahya Foundation and IIS 'Signs of the Creator 2' conference in Face Book. She wanted to go too .

Couscous and Harira Soup

I felt hungry suddenly and ordered a large tagine of couscous with beef and pumpkin. Tasty though I prefer lamb even more. Harira Soup was refreshing, invigorating and really hot - I like that.

Its not cheap to eat Moroccan food but its worth it - at least I know I am eating real fresh food thats not only a visual pleasure but definitely delicious! And lots of olive oil instead of cheap reused oil that is toxic.

The Moroccan tea was hot and sweet, but the hint of mint was subtle and satisfying.

Why are people willing to pay so much for fast food?

People are conditioned to pay so much more for fast food and yet do not complain. However they sometimes feel the pinch to pay for some real food though the prices are quite similar. Is fast food better? What's the attraction of eating boring mass produced food? Its not even balanced diet, usually lacking in fruits and vegetables. I do not like to eat from cardboard and foam boxes and plates. Sometimes even the food taste like cardboard!

At 4.30pm my son sent a message telling me not to bother about my dad's dinner! Dad had slept through his lunch and woke up at 4.30pm. By the time he went to the wash room, he had lunch at 5.oo p.m. Poor Dad!

Sweet Surprise

I reached home to find a large tall beautiful hamper waiting for me. Alhamdulillah! I have not even finished eating and sharing all the goodies from my Eid hamper of super health foods. Anyway, who's complaining.

Ferrero Roche and other goodies .... yum. Masha Allah, so very thoughtful and I do really appreciate that. I can't name names or heads will roll.... hee hee. Allah knows best.
